The Micronesia Climate Change Alliance and Our Common Wealth 670 will be hosting the summit, "Making Waves: For Peace and Climate Justice in the Pacific" on Friday and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Central Community Arts Hall in Sinajana.

In partnership with the Tishman Environment and Design Center at The New School, the summit will gather local, regional and global Environmental Justice Movement leaders from the Mariana Islands to develop a Declaration of Peace and Unity for the Region that honors ancestral knowledge, bring awareness to decision-makers, and leaves a road map for power-building for future generations.

According to groups’ press releases, the summit comes at a critical time when the Pacific has made headlines for both the increased military threats and the impact left on the islands by multiple climate disasters, such as Typhoon Mawar.

Also, it will be the first time there will be unified and formal demands made against the U.S. military in the region.

About 100 to 150 people are anticipated to participate as well as speakers from various neighboring islands and countries.

For the past two years, Rep. Sheila Babauta, Moñeka De Oro, Jasmine Flores-Cantrell, and Cami Diaz Egurrola have been part of The New School (NYC) Environmental Justice Movement Fellowship.

Following their participation at Climate Week in NYC, they intend to create an alternative space to the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP) with Making Waves II.
