An emergency session today to deal with nagging financial and structural deficiencies at the Guam Memorial Hospital was canceled because of the approaching storm. Republican Minority Leader Frank Blas, Jr. is pushing to fast track his bill to provide funding to the hospital from Fiscal Year 2022 and '23 excess revenues.

Blas told KUAM News, "Those amounts still need to be discussed but we're asking that those monies be shifted to GMH to help the agency pay down the debt that they owe and hopefully start to procure and obtain the equipment that is necessary that they need not just for the physical plant but basically pay off vendors."

Blas also has a resolution asking the governor to declare a state of emergency at GMH, which he believes is in the midst of a fiscal and physical crisis. The hospital's woes are not new though.

Would yet another cash injection just be throwing more good money after bad?

"If we're pouring good money into bad things, what makes it bad, what can we do to fix it, what can be done to make it better?" the senator continued. "One of the suggestions I'm going to bring up is to put together a task force, so that we're not looking at building, the last task force was put together so that we can find a way to build a new hospital. well we need to put aa task force together to fix what we have existing as a hospital."

Meanwhile, according to KUAM files, this would be the sixth emergency session convened by the Guam Legislature in the last eight months.
