Saipan residents sang Amazing Grace in unison as the Substance Abuse, Addiction, and Rehabilitation Program H.O.P.E Recovery Center marks its 6th year anniversary -- helping those in need find their way again.

"Because of the challenges we currently face in the CNMI we can no longer work in silos. We must work together," said Diego Sablan who is the Special Assistant for SAAR.

The center provides a safe, sober, and supportive home environment for individuals to learn coping and relapse-prevention skills. Corrections Commissioner Anthony Torres is an advocate for rehabilitation and shared a deeply personal story about his older brother Charles Torres.

The commissioner said, "Charles is in recovery. He is a graduate of the drug court program and has experienced the transformative impact of the SAAR program. Witnessing his journe'y reaffirmed my belief in the power of collaboration and partnership.

Charles Torres added, "I stand before you today not as an addict in recovery but as a survivor. A survivor who has fought a battle. A battle that many deemed unbeatable. Yet here I am. I am proof that Drug Court and recovery centers like this work."

He admits, his story isn’t unique. But it’s an example of what an island can do for its people and why sharing your story matters.

CNMI Gov. Arnold Palacios said, "So there are many stories. There are so many stories in recovery. And it is possible. One of these days I will share my story."

Drug Court judge Terea Kim-Tenorio says how we tell that story matters and framing the issue for what it truly is, is critical. She said, "I want everyone to know and recognize that drug addiction is a disease. I am quite frustrated with people saying drug addiction is not a disease…by branding addiction primarily as a crime or moral failing, we perpetuate a cycle of shame and discrimination."

The center is reviving hope in that notion: that recovery is possible.

SAAR Program Manager Charlotte Flores said, "SAAR may be a small program, but we help change lives."
