The trial goes on.

Murder defendant Nathan Ojeda appeared before Presiding Judge Alberto Lamorena today, accused of shooting Anthony "AJ" Mendiola in front of Mendiola’s home on Jan. 4 in Hagat.

His face was expressionless, changing from looking down to looking up as he listened to Dr. Jeffery Nine’s testimony as he took the stand.

Nine is Guam’s medical examiner who performed the autopsy of Mendiola’s body on Jan. 10.

He testified about his findings which included finding bullets in his body.

Nine: The diagram looks a little busy in those areas, the one on his leg and the ones on his arm because of shrapnel injury.
Prosecuting attorney Basil O’Mallan: And what caused the shrapnel?
Nine: The bullet fragmenting before entering his body.
O’Mallan: Because it bounced off the ground. Did you recover the bullet that entered his abdomen?
Nine: No.
O’Mallan: Because it had an exit and it left his body?
Nine: Correct. It exited his body and it was not presented to me at the autopsy.

Additionally, Nine said although the bullet that struck Mendiola’s abdomen caused the most blood loss, all of the shots that he sustained could have equally contributed to his death.

When defense attorney Jocelyn Roden questioned Nine if one of the bullets could’ve been stuck in the body during his examination, he said it would be impossible.

Roden: When the bullet enters the body, it is smaller than, when you turn over the body, it looks bigger is that true?
Nine: No.
Roden: Is it true the back of the body had laceration?
Nine: Yes.
Roden: So can you say that the entry wound is clean but the back is messed up?
Nine: No.
Roden: Is it possible that the bullet was stuck in his back? From bullet wound a, that the bullet was stuck on his back?
Nine: And you’re saying I didn’t see it in the autopsy?
Roden: I’m just asking if it’s possible.
Nine: It’s not possible.
Roden: And you didn’t extract it from him?
Nine: No.

Ojeda allegedly told Guam police officers that he was defending himself, saying he was shot at first while driving by the residence.

Although he could not determine whether or not Mendiola’s death was intentional, he stand by his ruling of it to be a homicide.

The trial went on throughout the day with Guam Police Department officers who responded to the scene testifying.
