Motorists should be a little more careful when driving near the intersection of Marine Corps Drive and Airport Road over the next three months.

The "Donki Village" shopping mall project across from the Tamuning McDonald's will be constructing access lanes to the property.

Project architect Kilhak Kunimoto says they'll only be working at night to minimize traffic congestion.

"This doesn't take place during the daytime, so it's gonna happen between 8:00 and 4:00," he said. "The actual work is 9:00 to 3:00. It's gonna take one hour to set it up, all the signs. Every day only six hours we can work."

He says they might need to close one northbound lane on Marine Corps Drive fronting the location, but no lanes on Airport Road will be closed.

The work started Friday night and will continue through the end of November.

Kunimoto says the owners are not ready to announce the projected opening or other details about the mall, but he expects shoppers will be very pleased.

"Once you go inside the store and you see all the variety of items you'll be happy and it's gonna be very good, very exciting project," Kunimoto said. "We're going to try to open as soon as possible, but there's a lot of things that we still have to work on, yeah."

The village of Donki is owned by Japanese retail giant "Don Quijote," which also operates international stores known as Don Don Donki.

The company is often referred to as the "Walmart of Japan."

The project has been delayed by the pandemic and more recently by Typhoon Mawar.
