The meeting to the public eye was abrupt and brief.

The Guam Education Board Wednesday afternoon called the emergency meeting.

The discussion comes the week after board members mentioned they would be going over the lawsuit filed against them and the Guam Department of Education.

Parents suing GDOE allege they failed to provide adequate public education for two minor students with disabilities.

Less than two minutes in, the board decided to continue the meeting without the public.

GEB Board Chair Mary Okada led the meeting.

“It has been moved and seconded that we go into executive session; any discussion? All those in favor, please indicate by saying aye," she said. "All those opposed, please indicate in saying nay. We are now in executive session.”

It then became a confidential matter.

Still, the emergency special meeting’s agenda indicated litigation matters, although education officials aren't confirming with KUAM what specific legal matters.

The GEB meeting last week to discuss an array of issues, with GEB member, Angel Sablan directly addressing the looming lawsuit.

Sablan then declared he won’t be fighting the lawsuit, which is set for a hearing on Sept. 15 in Superior Court.

Back at Wednesday's emergency meeting, board member Peter Alecxis Ada moved it along.

“I would make a motion to recess and allow the superintendent and the attorneys representing the board of education, to come up with an offer or things to resolve this matter, and the board will meet on Friday, the first of September, at 12 noon," he said.

The board reopened it to the public only to announce the GDOE superintendent and the ad hoc subcommittee– consisting of GEB members Okada, Ada and Maria Gutierrez can provide a plan to the board for consideration.

KUAM's requests for more information on exactly what plan they are developing have gone unanswered.
