In the hallways and inside the classrooms, rodents one by one by one are getting caught in traps set up at D.L. Perez Elementary School in Yigo.

It's a discovery that would immediately raise red flags by the Department of Public Health and Social Services.

It comes as health inspectors are still slowly trying to get to each Guam Department of Education campus in the next year.

The chilling images were sent to education oversight chair Sen. Chris Barnett -- less than 24 hours left before he is set to hold an oversight hearing with public school leaders.

"Since the first day of school, I’ve just been overwhelmed and bombarded with very concerning messages from parents, students, and teachers about the conditions in the schools," he said. "I know the GDOE wanted to have a nice, fun first day of school but it presented many challenges. I am hearing things like concerns about lack of air conditions across the district. I received a complaint a teacher who took the temperature inside the classroom and it read 95 degrees. I am also receiving many concerns from parents about exposed ceiling tiles, mold in the school, and this morning video reports of rodents at D.L. Perez in Yigo. I think when we decided to go back on Public Law 37-4 we went back to conditions that led to its passage. We have gone backwards."

The alarming new video comes as no surprise to the freshman lawmaker.

"GDOE is not explaining any of these things to the parents or stakeholders and I think that’s a shame," Barnett said. "I understand they had their hands busy trying to get the kids back to school, but at the same time, they’ve got to answer these concerns. If they are not going to address the parents, then I will make sure they address the concerns in that oversight hearing."

Despite lingering concerns, GDOE spokesperson Michelle Franquez recently told KUAM News the feedback during the first week back to school has been positive.

"GDOE is committed to updating the island community about these changes and any good news that is moving forward," she said. "We thank everyone who is bearing with this. This is our return to school. We are trying to make sure we move as smoothly as possible through the first couple of weeks and for the rest of the school year. Our priority is making sure that they have safe and healthy schools and we thank our community for supporting us in every which way possible."

While Barnett agrees the positive response is that students are excited to be back to school, he says the reality is that the conditions are unacceptable.

"Are kids happy to be in school? Sure," he said. "But I think it’s more concerning that we are looking at the conditions of the schools where I’ve seen positive things are also sharing their complaints and concerns. This is not to take away from what GDOE has done. But part of the reason we got into this situation in the first place is GDOE and adelup down to the legislature have been in denial about the condition at our schools for many years. I think that with this cha cha where we took two steps forward and now we take more than two steps back looks like we are in denial again. And I don’t think you can address any issues if you are in denial."

GDOE's oversight hearing is set for this Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
