The Department of Public Works plans to meet with Smithbridge about the barge the company was transporting yesterday that caused the hours-long traffic jam on Marine Corps Drive in Tamuning. The truck was more than halfway from Yigo to its destination at the port, when a tire blew.

DPW director Vince Arriola told KUAM News, "One tire went out, then the next tire went out and i think they had three if not four tires and so they actually had the flat tire, I think as far back as the Tamuning Fire Station, but they couldn't pull over otherwise they'd be blocking the whole southbound lane of Marine Drive. So they had to wait until they got in front of the Docomo [Pacific] offices so they could pull into the middle and let the traffic continue to pass."

He says they ended up replacing all the tires, and once they got going again it took them only about an hour to get to the port. Arriola says he regrets that the transport took place on a weekday and greatly impacted rushhour traffic.

"I have to counsel staff, our staff, while they did have a permit we should have allowed that transport to happen on either a Friday night or a Saturday night. That way, if something happens, which like it did, we have either Saturday day or Sunday day to take care of the issue," Arriola said.

There was no damage to the roadways, and the transporting company is required to post a bond just in case.

Arriola says they still plan to meet with Smithbridge to determine what action to take.
