"The United States is a Pacific Country and so we are honored to be a partner in the success that these islands seek to enjoy," Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said on her visit to Saipan.

She is in Saipan for two days and met with CNMI Governor Arnold Palacios and Lt. Gov. David Apatang Friday morning. She was joined by Assistant Secretary of the Interior Carmen Cantor and Asian American & NHPI Senior Liaison Erika Moritsugu from The White House.

CNMI Gov. Arnold Palacios said, "I know they are very busy and there are going to be some salient discussions that we will have and we welcome the opportunity and we are very honored with your visit and your presence."

The secretary was not available for questions but delivered brief remarks at the governor’s office ahead of meetings and site visits to Interior-funded projects on Saipan. Her visit comes at a time when the CNMI is seeking federal assistance amid austerity measures.

CNMI Lt. Gov. David Apatang said, "We still need a lot of assistance and I am very happy and our people appreciate that you made the time to come and see us here."

The Interior Secretary’s visit also coincides with The White House’s “Investing in America Tour” highlighting investments in infrastructure across three weeks in 33 states and territories.

"We are also very proud of the president’s Investing in America agenda that is also ensuring that a lot of projects and work can move forward to benefit the people here," Haaland said.
