The Guam Department of Education's community input sessions to discuss school conditions and projected school start dates kick off tonight both virtually and in person.

Ahead of the discussion, we spoke to stakeholders about what they think school officials should address before the start of the new school year.

Angelina Yapsaw, Dededo: Oh there's a lot. My kids go to GDOE schools and I've seen a lot of things that need to be replaced. Cafeterias, they are walking under the rain to get to their classrooms, air conditioning, and a lot.

John Santos, Santa Rita: The restrooms in the schools are really bad according to my grandchildren.

Vangie Claassens, Asan: The safety of the children especially this previous typhoon and infrastructures are probably a concern.

Roman Edquilane, Hagatna: For one thing, the last thing i was watching on tv, was a lot of crimes against the schools. People were breaking in and stealing computers and school equipment. I think that's a serious concern that needs to be addressed.

GDOE officials have their work cut out for them with schools reopening just weeks later.

And with Department of Public Health and Social Services inspections ongoing, school officials are self-inspecting to classify schools into three phases relative to their readiness for opening in-person instruction.

Currently, 17 schools are in phase 1– schools projected to be ready as scheduled on Aug. 9 or no more than two weeks later.

Twelve schools are in phase 2– schools projected to be ready three weeks to two months later than the scheduled start date.

And 12 schools are in phase 3 – schools are projected to be ready three months or more later than the scheduled start date.

Officials note, schools still need to receive a sanitary permit from Public Health to reopen.

Currently, six schools have been inspected with three more to be inspected in the summer.
