The local prison is on lockdown and an investigation is underway after a reported stabbing early this morning.

Prison leaders are not saying much about the incident. The prisoner was rushed to the hospital is expected to undergo surgery.

The 36-year-old inmate is responsive at the Guam Memorial Hospital.

Now a police investigation and an internal investigation at the prison are underway at the Department of Corrections.

It happened around 6:30 this morning at the Department of Corrections prison in Mangilao.

We immediately reached out to doc director joe Carbullido for information.

Instead, the prison only issued a media release briefly addressing what went down.

It states a correctional officer assigned to Post 16 – the general population unit – told investigators that he suddenly noticed an inmate with “unspecified injuries.”

KUAM has learned the inmate was seen holding his neck while bleeding out. Other inmates were in the area at the time.

The circumstances of how the inmate was injured remain a mystery.

As for potential suspects? That’s what police are looking into as well.

So far, no suspects have been identified.

DOC leadership says the inmate was rushed to GMH by ambulance.

Though his condition has not yet been released.

Guam Police Department spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella told KUAM that officers did respond to a call of an injured person at DOC.

The police investigation however still DOC’s internal affairs unit will also determine if the officers assigned to the unit were doing their jobs prior to seeing the injured inmate.

Prison leaders are not releasing anything else as the investigation gets going…

This incident comes about two months after a 36-year-old detainee was found dead in Post 29, the local detainee housing unit.

KUAM has learned that the investigation has since been completed, and the results show he died by suicide.
