American Red Cross officials may not have anticipated the island's hot and humid weather to disrupt their efforts to provide a comfortable shelter for Typhoon Mawar evacuees at a Tamuning warehouse. But despite their good intentions, the reality is that shelterees are getting sick. Now, Adelup is requesting the shelter to move to a better location.

Plus, a shocking bombshell was dropped as a local doctor confirmed with KUAM that a baby from the Tamuning shelter was transferred to the emergency room earlier this week.

The shelter has been an effort to provide a more comfortable and sanitary shelter. Governor Lou Leon Guerrero published a video as Typhoon Mawar evacuees were moved to the Guam Pak Express warehouse in Tamuning, serving as the American Red Cross Tier III shelter last week.

Aaron McIntyre with the American Red Cross n that video says, "Last night we moved all of the clients from one of the school shelters into this facility. We were able to get them on cots, get them up off the ground, get meals served to them, give them an area where they can use bathrooms and showers. And then we have health services, mental health services, and spiritual health services that are all on site to help do evaluations."

But the shelter still falls woefully short - with children getting sick with Influenza B. One of the doctors called to the shelter everyday since this Tuesday, Dr. Hoa Nguyen with American Medical Center says so far five children tested positive for the virus.

He confirms even a baby was sent to the ER at the Guam Memorial Hospital.

"We transferred one 7- or 8-month-old to the emergency room on the first day because of low oxygen. But so far the rest of them are being treated with anti-viral medication at the shelter," Dr. Nguyen said.

And more spoke-up about the shelter's poor conditions on Wednesday, like Lori Quichocho, who said, "It’s really bad. The whole situation here is bad and to begin with the ventilation is very poor."

Form a leadership perspective, Tamuning-Tumon-Harmon mayor Louise Rivera said, "It’s under capacity. They need more space."

And now, the administration is requesting for the “immediate relocation” of the Tamuning shelter. The Governor's Office issuing a press release stating “Upon notification of current shelter conditions, we began the process of securing a new location with remaining inventory. Sites previously identified as shelters, including village gymnasiums, are either under construction or left severely damaged by Typhoon Mawar. These challenges are compounded by limited commercial real estate available for such support.”

Still, the Red Cross plans to keep that shelter open. Public affairs manager Samantha Taylor told KUAM News their Disaster Health Services Team is working with the Guam Department of Public Health and local clinics to ensure the shelter is safe for both residents and staff.

Dr. Nguyen says GovGuam should step up and provide support, noting, "We have to. The Red Cross tried their best. It's a big challenge that the Red Cross has. I think the local government should step in also and offer their help to the Red Cross because they cannot do everything for the shelter."

Meanwhile, as the situation is fluid, neither Public Health nor the Red Cross were able to provide information on how many residents contracted the virus or how many children tested positive.
