Homes and businesses are boarding up, preparing for Typhoon Mawar's arrival. No doubt, those living in areas most vulnerable to flooding - already getting ready for the potential headache ahead. KUAM checked-in on areas from the north to the south of Guam, finding out if they are ready.

Shutters and wooden boards covering windows and doors. Overgrown trees and branches are cut, and other items left outside are tied down or secured. It's preparation underway in the wake of Typhoon Mawar's approach to the Marianas.

Rodrigo Molina, who lives in East Gayinero Road in Yigo, is making those preps and already planning to evacuate before the weather gets too messy. "We just move in to my daughter’s house in Mangilao. We cannot stay here for a long time because the typhoon showers are 24 hours. This area is flooded prone," he explained.

We caught up with Molina as he was making some last-minute checks to secure his property. He said, "We just put our cable in out roof because maybe the typhoon is so-so; we’re just preparing to put some cable on my roof and put some patches on my drainage or from toilet to all that have access to water."

Molina came to Guam in 2002 during Supertyphoon Pongsona. "I had appliances damaged and you know, there’s a lot of, especially my neighbors complaining about the flooded area," he said.

Previous storms left this part of the village partially under water. He says he's still waiting for the administration to fix the issue after a recent visit by Lieutenant Governor Joshua Tenorio last year. Similarly, Oshean Saralu, who lives on the opposite end of the village says his area also gets its share of rising waters.

"The flooding usually happens over here in the middle of the yard, like in all the holes. It’s not as bad but during typhoons, it does get pretty bad," he said.

Saralu shared, "We usually pack everything up, put most of our stuff inside of our garage and just secure everything, especially the windows."

It's a similar situation happening across the island. Village leaders working with their community to prepare and prevent severe damage. Further south, Malesso mayor Ernest Chargualaf says he already had his staff remove possible hazardous debris in areas known to flood.

He told KUAM News, "Everybody else knows to board up your windows to avoid any trying to avoid any type of debris going into your homes. The flood, it’s already bringing tranquility and peace of mind that the pre-positioning of the equipment is already done, it’s a matter of mobilizing."

The mayor added that his staff is already standing by to respond whenever necessary.

Many more also aren't sitting back and waiting to find out just how strong the storm's impact will be. Still, residents like Molina and Saralu are doing all they can to secure their homes and prevent as much damage as possible once those expected flood waters begin to flow in.
