The threats in our region have gained the interest of many who call the island home like Tisha Sanchez.

"There were reports of a suspected Chinese spy balloon that passed over Guam, and as we know that kind of sparked some concerns with the island," she said.

Sanchez is a student at the University of Guam pursuing a Master's degree in Public Administration

She along with her peer, Tony Ngirarois, and the rest of the Administrative Law class at UOG have closely watched as guam has once again made national headlines.

"And more recently we learned there were Chinese warships outside of Guam waters, so our class thought it was important to have the discussion with the key leaders to inform them of the incidents regarding what is happening with Taiwan and the increased tensions with China and the U.S.," Sanchez said.

And that’s why this class is hosting the forum called - understanding the Taiwan Crisis: Its impact on Guam and the region.

"There’s a lot of issues going on in the island and we kind of forget that outside of our waters there is a major crisis that is going on. It can definitely impact our island as far as security, political influence or even economical turmoil," Ngirarois said.

The group is calling on a panelist of military and local leaders they can engage like the joint region marianas chief of staff Capt. Michael Smith, acting Gov. Josh Tenorio and others.

"We need at least minimum awareness of what we can do to be prepared in case something happens," Ngirarois said. "Things could happen and there could be war so we want the public to be informed and prepared."

The forum is set for May 6 – this Saturday at the UOG School of Business and Public Administration building – Room 131 from 10 a.m. to noon.
