There's less than one week left before the new April 30 deadline to sign the Eagles Field lease with the military. Speaker Therese Terlaje was hoping to discuss the deal for the proposed multi-billion dollar medical campus that Governor Lou Leon Guerrero wants built on that site.
A public hearing is set for tomorrow morning.
But the governor confirmed with the speaker she won’t be there stating, she will be off-island, adding there are no new details to share at this time. Terlaje was optimistic she would be there considering senators were not involved in the lease negotiations.
"It’s not a matter of being excluded from their discussion," Terlaje said. "If they want to have those that is up to them. That is one issue but the real issue is whatever deal any official of the government of Guam wants to make with some other entity, they normally cannot commit the people of Guam to that without some kind of authorization, especially if it includes funding. If she wants funding then is she going to tell us the details of the deal or are they going to go forward in the dark the whole way of building this hospital and leave people out of it.
"I don’t understand that part."
The governor also wrote to the speaker that she has been very public with her plans for the new medical complex.
In response, terlaje stated on social media, “I hope the lieutenant governor can attend to address the attorney general’s recommendations regarding the non-compliance of the lease with federal and local laws."
