A man is facing forgery charges for writing and cashing over $3,000 in stolen checks, according to a magistrate report filed in the Superior Court of Guam.

On March 14, while investigating a burglary at Yudu Corporation, a Guam Police Department officer met with an owner/representative of UR Market in Dededo.

The market reported that an individual, later identified as 35-year-old Makrino Menai, had cashed six checks, totaling to $3,750. 52 between Feb. 13 - 17.

The checks were drawn on various Yudu Corporation checking accounts and UR Market paid out on the checks.

When two banks called the store owner that the checks would be returned due to insufficient funds, the owner then contacted Yudu Corporation and learned the checks had been stolen during a burglary.

The officer confiscated four originals and two photocopies of checks from the Dededo market.

On Thursday, the officer interviewed Menai at the Central Precinct where after acknowledging and waiving his rights, Menai said he cashed two to three checks at the market.

Menai told the officer he allegedly got the black checks from his girlfriend and did not know, nor did he inquire, how she came into possession of the checks.

He also told the officer that neither he nor, to his knowledge, his girlfriend had ever been employed at the corporation, court documents state.

Manai further explained that he was the one who filled out, signed, and cashed the checks at the market because he needed money for necessities and to provide for other family members.

Menai recognized that his girlfriend is known to law enforcement and is identified in multiple ongoing investigations

All six (6) checks were paid to the order of Defendant and several included a corresponding phone number and passport number for identity verification.

Menai, 35, is charged with two six counts of forgery, both as second degree felonies
