The state of public safety is growing stronger, according to Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero.

The administration today released the statistics from the uniform crime report from 2021 showing how violent crimes, burglaries, and car thefts have inched their way down.

The numbers compare 2020 records with 2021.

Though the report states arrests jumped that same year by 7.15 percent, it also includes a chart that drug-related arrests in 2020 and 2021 have doubled since 2019 and the years prior.

It's a report Yigo resident Linda Teodoro says she finds hard to believe.

"I don’t agree with the crime rate being down and it’s not safe to go out anywhere," she said sharing that burglars broke into her home, letting her dogs loose.

"Almost two years ago, right on Holy Thursday and around my village, there’s people in my village that are too rowdy, up to no good," she said. "Maybe they arrest them but I hear they’re out again."

And Ben Wada says crime is a problem in the south as well.

"We have crime down in Agat, Santa Rita, people stealing things, they’re getting desperate," he said. "They’re stealing anything they can find. They stole right in my front yard."

That happened six months ago.

"...I don’t know if they were able to get them arrested," he said.

Wada did admit he still feels safe enough.

Safety on the island has been a top issue since the governor claimed the territory is safer.

A year ago, the governor said this: "I also do know they have a really great neighborhood watch organization out there. They are taking care of their neighbors and their communities, and the police is just as much involved in it as anyone else."

She added that she believes Guam is safer today.

The top brass of the police department echoed the same in this previous interview with KUAM News.

When asked if he thought the island was safe, Police Chief Stephen Ignacio said, "Absolutely. Guam is a very small-knit community and we continue to push out our community watch programs.

Today, the chief said, "social media and mass media affects the perception of crime and feeds into perceived fears. The picture of today’s crimes has been amplified through modern media, but the rate of arrests has increased, as well. It’s just not as amplified.”
