It’s the morning after a young boy was hit by a car while at a crosswalk in Barrigada.

KUAM News returned to the scene outside of Untalan Middle School, capturing the moment a silver sedan sped through a red light along Route 10. Another driver honked to get the red light runner’s attention – but the car keeps on going.

The Guam Police Department confirmed that’s what happened Tuesday afternoon just after 3 p.m. The driver of a pickup truck plowed through a red light hitting a child at the crosswalk.

The student is now stable and recovering from his injuries.

Police issued the driver involved a traffic ticket for running the red light.

Though, that’s not sitting well with some in the wildcats community.

"I am very upset about that. I can’t believe just a citation," Sara Meno Cruz said. "The child is stable, but still it could’ve been worse. A citation just doesn’t do it. I just think it’s sad because my daughter usually walks across and I do watch her and I do see cars, but it’s really sad that it’s only one aide and he just stays on the side."

Another upset parent spoke with KUAM said while picking up her daughter after school, she witnessed the moment the boy was hit by the driver in the pickup truck.

"Like a couple of minutes before she crossed, the individual ended up getting hit and we were just shocked because we did see it and she was traumatized," she said.

The worried mother is left having to help her child cope with the aftermath from seeing her classmate hit while crossing the street.

Parent Joe Cruz said drivers, too, need to be more responsible.

"They should slow down because this is a school zone and the speed limit reduces in a school zone and obviously they are not even paying attention to that," he said.

The speed limit in the school zone – 15 miles per hour.

Late Tuesday, Guam Department of officials say the school principal and nurse were among those who rushed over to help the injured student and called 911 as well as the boy’s parents.

Joe Cruz agrees with other parents that the Guam Department of Education, village leaders, and even Guam Police need to ramp up safety in school zones.

"It’s very sad because the kids are crossing the street all the time and people run the red lights like we just saw," he said. "Something really has to be done."

It's something Sara Meno Cruz hopes comes soon.

"I was very worried. I thought it was him because he is a walker so I was very worried and concerned," she said.

We asked her what she thinks needs to be done.

"Just more caution for the drivers, more awareness. There is a red light and I don’t know how they didn’t see that it was red and he just ran it," she said.

Early Wednesday morning, as the school bell rang in the distance, two school staff members in bright reflective jackets and a whistle assisted students making their way to the campus on foot.

Still, the parent who witnessed the crash said, "There’s no cones from one end to the other. I suggest they need more aides out and even the mayor’s office to help to have the kids cross safely because it’s really dangerous."

It's a danger these parents now want to be addressed fast so that accidents like this never happen again.
