Hundreds of notices issued locally since the direct threat from North Korea were made to Guam six years ago.

The advisories from Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense constantly shows that the launches since 2017 posed zero threat to our island.

Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero reassured the community that despite recent international reports of the activity out of North Korea, Guam is well protected.

"The United States is also very much paying a lot of attention here in trying to fortify and trying to surround us with defense system and national security, so I am very confident in the protection of our people here," she said. "Those missiles as you know are being tracked."

In the past week, North Korea fired two more ballistic missiles off its east coast, and just today state media reported the north test-fired four strategic cruise missiles during a drill designed to demonstrate its ability to conduct a nuclear counterattack against hostile forces.

Officials on Guam meantime continue monitoring the activity.

Guam Homeland Security spokesperson Jenna Blas says they continue to take an all hazards and all threats approach to any emergency situation.

"There is no change in our threat level," she said. "But we continue to push out notices whenever we see activity with any foreign nation or state including North Korea. We do have what is called a state warning point which is housed here at GHS Civil Defense. They serve as a state warning point for the whole territory."

The effort is manned 24-7 around the clock to monitor potential threats and issue timely reports to the community.

The latest round of launches from the north is also a reminder of the threat in 2017 when the island was given guidance on how to stay ready should a missile head our way.

"Roughly 14 minutes which is not a lot of time to prepare for any type of threat," Blas said. "So it’s important that are notices are timely and up to date. The very first thing you can do is make your family emergency kit, making sure you have all the supplies you need if you need to evacuate or shelter at home, all of the supplies you need to sustain for at least seven to 10 days."

The All Hazards Alert Warning System is also is in place being tested monthly.
