It’s a parent's worst nightmare—your child’s school threatened with gun violence.

Ocean View Middle School officials launched an investigation into a detailed threat of mass harm by a student sent to a Guam Department of Education email.

But imagine hearing about it after the fact—not a phone call or text message notifying you of the potentially life-threatening situation from those charged with caring for your children.

That’s what one mother tells us happened— still shaken after only hearing of the incident from a fellow parent three days later.

KUAM News agreed not to name the mom.

“The school didn’t inform any of the parents of the children that attend that school, and this happened since Friday, and I found out yesterday, so the thing is, is that: what is the protocol of the school regarding threats like this, and why did they not inform any of the parents? If it was done on Friday and found out about it through the weekend, why did they not shut down the school on Monday for the safety of the children, of all the children?"

The threat made its way to a group chat her child was in with other students. The concerned parent is angry authorities interviewed her child and other underage students without the parents present.

“I’m very upset at this, that they interviewed my child without my consent—at least call me, but they didn’t, they did not do nothing! My child was very scared—he relayed to me that he was very scared," the mother said.

KUAM has learned a 14-year-old boy was taken into custody and is being held at the Department of Youth Affairs for terroristic conduct. He allegedly admitted to police that he sent the email out of frustration.

In the meantime, the mother is calling for GDOE and school officials to establish more explicit protocols, more transparency, urgency, and preemptive action—for the safety of students and staff.

“We don’t have to wait for something like this to happen to have protocols set into place—you need to be vigilant, you need to be sure that you know what you’re doing as far as the safety of our children are concerned because we put the responsibility in your hands—your hands! You are the parent throughout the day," the woman said.

KUAM reached out to GDOE about her concerns - but did not hear back as of news time.

This is the second threat made at a local middle school in the past week.

GDOE today confirming Untalan Middle School implemented a no-bag policy for the remainder of the week after an apparent message circulated on social media.

The details of the message are not being made public but it was enough for the school to call the Guam Police Department and to take precautionary measures.
