A significant moment symbolizing the revitalization efforts of traditional medicinal and cultural practices.

It’s the launch of Guam Green Growth’s new sustainability program– the Yo’amte Project.

And leading this next generation of traditional healers is yo’amte Lourdes manglona.

"This medicine is passed down from my grandmother," she shared. "My mom’s side and my dad’s side. When I was small, she taught me and showed me medicine. How it looks like and how to touch it. And when I was 8 years old I started pounding the medicine. That’s why I know all the medicinal plants."

She recounts her childhood spent in rota, as her grandmother’s apprentice gathering herbs and plants used in traditional medicine.

"According to my grandmother when she raised me up and before she died, she said ‘that medicine that I taught you, you have to go out and teach the people. Help the people to learn about the medicine,'" she said.

Manglona is keeping that knowledge alive by passing it down to the next generation.

"The CHamoru medicine is very important in our tradition because this is our culture," she said. "It passed down from me and I have to pass this down to the new generation. And it’s very important that they learn our culture."

Through the yo’amte project, she will be teaching others what she learned from her grandmother.

Manglona already getting started as shares amot- or CHamoru medicine, this one made with the sibukao plant.

"This is what we planted today, the sibukao," she said. "The sibukao is very important among all the recipes in the medicine. The sibukao is cleansing if you have congestion, fever, or headache. It will clear it out."

Her traditional medicine classes and workshops will be announced through the University of Guam in the coming weeks.
