Rodent infestation, black mold, roof leaks, and more.

With schools like F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle and Southern High School continuously in the spotlight for the poor conditions at their campuses, the Guam Education Board is forced to step in.

GEB Chair Mary Okada told KUAM that board members will visit a handful of the island’s public schools to see the extent of things firsthand.

The visit is expected for this Saturday when students are out of the classrooms.

Board Vice Chair Maria Gutierrez says the tours will be done in place of their usual retreat.

“So, it was Dr. Okada that said, 'OK, we usually have retreats which are on Saturdays'—so her recommendation is its best for this retreat that we go out to the schools so that we can see for ourselves what are the issues at the school," she said.

The assessments will be phased in gradually.

“It could be like a Saturday; we can go to 4 or 5 schools and see for ourselves," Gutierrez said.

It’s a long-standing issue that warrants evaluation, not just from the GEB.

Senators intensely discussed the matter over meetings—with some even visiting schools for themselves.

It’s also rallied the involvement of the island’s mayors—Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares urged them to participate with the GEB for school visits in their villages.

"We will have a checklist, and we will look at the schools that really need immediate attention, and we’ll have our new acting superintendent, Dr. Judi Won Pat, with us and maintenance personnel to look at each school," Gutierrez said. "From there, we’ll see which one really needs immediate attention—or, I’m sorry—facilities, maintenance, restrooms, leakage, and everything. So, we’re gonna go from that."

While George Washington, Southern, and Simon Sanchez High are no doubt among the campuses with longstanding problems, board members say they still finalizing which schools to visit this week.
