Meet marine veteran, husband and father of two – Keoni Kim.

Those are his accomplishments, made in part with the support of Rainbows for All Children of Guam. The nonprofit organization helps children, adolescents, and adults that are going through traumatic, life-altering experiences such as divorce or the death of a loved one.

You see –his childhood past is in no way unique from others. He came from a broken home. His mom and dad divorced when was only 7 or 8. And though, even at such a young age, he still remembers the day dad took his belongings and left.

"Usually I watch TV when I come home from school. And then the upstairs TV was gone," he said. "So it's basically like, hey, so I called my mom and was like, Hey, what happened to the TV? And she basically said when I get home. I'll explain. That's basically how I came to find out that my parents were splitting up. I remember you know, I locked myself in my upstairs bathroom because I was really mad about what was happening, thinking it was probably something that I did."

He blamed his dad for leaving.

And the sudden separation left Kim with emotional scars.

That’s when he was referred to attend Rainbows For All Children.

"Not only did it give me an outlet, or a way to express myself, like later on in life," he said. "It probably subconsciously helped me be able to manage my own feelings once I started, you know, going into adulthood and, you know, taking personal growth classes, not realizing that I even took personal growth classes as, as a young child."

The organization has helped thousands of children since 1987 get through difficult moments in their lives including Kim.

It’s where Kim learned how to express his feelings in a positive way, by doing activities like journaling. He also learned how to forgive his dad.

"I told my dad, it is what it is," he said. "And I know we can't go back in time and change the past. "My dad didn't want to not spend time with me, it was just hard for him to realize that, you know, when he would pick me up for visitation and all that, that it was hard for him to pick me up, and then drop me off again. And for him, what I didn't know was that it broke, you know, kind of broke his heart every time that he dropped me back to my mom, which I didn't realize at the time."

Kim spent even more time with his father during the holidays.

And when his dad fell terminally ill, he was there to help take care of him.

On Jan 22, Kim said his goodbyes. His dad had passed.

It's another tough life moment. Kim thought back to his time with Rainbows For All, the techniques he learned, and the day the organization’s executive director, Marie Halloran told his dad this: "For my dad, to be told by Ms. Halloran. Like, if, if you're gonna promise to pick up your son, you gotta go be there. I know, it hurts for you. But you also, if you're gonna say, you're gonna be here, for your, your son, you need to, you know, show up and do this stuff."

Showing up is what he does for his family thanks to Rainbows For All Children.

"I believe that should be my opinion, it should be offered to every school that wants to have it and it would benefit every child, or even middle school or high schooler that is going through something in their life," he said.
