Village mayors are getting reminders to be ready in the event a fire ravages a home in their neighborhoods.

American Red Cross Guam Chapter Disaster program manager Ambrosio Constantino spoke with the Mayors' Council of Guam during a special meeting earlier today.

"So what can American Red Cross do for you? One is we can go out there and go to the individual’s homes. We just need a phone call from all you to let us know that help is needed," he said.

Often times Red Cross hears about house fires in the news, adding it is important for mayors to get as many details as possible about homeowners affected, so they can step in to adequately help out.

Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares admits some of the newer mayors need the training.

"For our staff to get trained, we give them the location of the family that’s affected, they already know what to bring before they leave their Agana office," she said. "So if we give them the correct information because we did our assessment he knows what tools and what resources to bring with him."

The talk comes after a fire destroyed part of a home in Asan earlier this month and killed five of the family's pets.

Asan-Maina Mayor Frank Salas took the opportunity to thank the red cross for their assistance.
