A special delivery arrived to Guam from thousands of miles away. A nurse currently serving in Afghanistan gave a special tribute to the island and to the hospital here - where she once worked.

A United States flag was flown over Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital city , in honor of the Guam Memorial Hospital. The unique act was done by Captain Carrie Lang, a former travel nurse who worked at the public hospital. She now lives in Kabul and serves in the military as one it’s nurses.

GMH staff nurse Olivia Elliot was thrilled after Lang had sent the flag to Guam, telling KUAM News, "I just felt so much honor. I teared up because we’re such a small island, we’re such a small hospital and to be recognized over a country, which we’re fighting for freedom, I just felt so honored."

ICU nurse Alvin Resurreccion recounts the time he worked with Capt. Lang and her dedication to the hospital. "She did work at our interventional radiology unit, as well as our intensive care unit 2018 to 2019. She practically became family. She had a very magnetic personality. You could just tell that she genuinely loved to care for the patients and their family members," he shared.

Though not originally from Guam, Lang cared for the patients as if they were her own flesh and blood, something both Elliot and Resurreccion say they loved about her.

Elliot added the special delivery included a letter from Lang, saying, "She’s doing her time there in the military so that she can help gain those experiences and further her career. She always intends to come back home, is what she mentioned in her letter. We miss her dearly."

An intention, as many at GMH look forward to seeing Lang back in action doing the work she loves so much at the hospital.
