While we wait for updates on the pending debt relief plan currently in litigation, President Joe Biden announced that his secretary of education cleared yet another pause on student loan payments.

The White House released the video where Biden said the repayment pause is extended to no later than June 30 of next year.

The announcement comes as the White House faces a barrage of lawsuits aimed at stopping the Biden administration's student loan cancellation program. The latest blow to the program came earlier this month after a federal judge in Texas blocked the plan calling it "unlawful."

This means payments will restart 60 days after the Supreme Court makes its decision, or on June 30, whichever comes first.

That means student loan repayments could begin earlier than June 30 if the court rules on the lawsuit early in the year.

"We're not going to back down, though, in our fight to give families breathing room," Biden said. "That's why the Department of Justice is asking the Supreme Court of the United States to rule on the case. But it isn't fair to ask tens of millions of borrowers eligible for relief to resume their student debt payments while the courts consider the lawsuit.

For that reason, the Secretary of Education is extending the pause on student loan payments, while we seek relief from the courts. But no later than June 30, 2023. Which would give the Supreme Court an opportunity to hear the case in its current term. Payments will resume 60 days after the pause ends. I'm never going to apologize for helping working-class and middle-class families recover from the economic crisis created by the pandemic. And I'll continue working to make government work to deliver for all Americans - for all Americans. This is important."

The president wouldn't authorize another student loan repayment pause, but reversed course after his debt cancellation plan faced delays in the courts.

His plan would cancel billions of dollars in federal student loans. The White House says millions of application have already been approved.
