Scientists are in search of volcanic activity deep in the Pacific in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas. It's a volcano that the U.S. Geological Survey officials suspect started to erupt about a month ago.

Guam National Weather Service Meteorologist Landon Aydlett is aware of the activity being monitored in our area.

"They were having a notification on the hydrophones, getting some the seismic sounds of a possible eruption," he said. "The way those work, it measures the pressure traveling through the water and it can pinpoint where the activity is taking place and that is where we are getting the notification of seismic activity in the Mariana Islands."

The Washington Post reported scientists are looking to see if the activity is shallow earthquakes or if material exploded from the crater, as well as if there’s discolored water, which could suggest material is coming out of the volcano.

"That’s definitely a possibility," Aydlett said. "We have this activity from time to time in the region on the Philippine and Pacific plate where they converge…we are in a very seismically active region of the Pacific, so that is just one of the concerns we have on a daily basis in our region."

Experts not yet seeing any signs of an eruption that could intensify.

"This is something that we shouldn’t be so much worried about but we should always maintain a steady state of preparedness because we do have those underwater volcanoes all the way up the Marianas chain, there is actually 60 active volcanoes in the region," Aydlett said. "That is both above the water and underwater. So we have to keep that in mind. But just like earthquakes and tsunami preparedness, we cannot forecast earthquakes, we always have to be generally prepared for any type of national hazards."

The activity reportedly declining in recent days.
