Okkodo students share international cultures for United Nations Day

At the Home of the Bulldogs, in celebration of United Nations Day, Okkodo High School’s Social Studies Department had its students share dances from around the world and promote various cultures. UN Day is observed and celebrated on October 24, but the northern high school decided to celebrate it weeklong to promote unity and peace.
The message the students came up with this year was “End Racism, Build Peace.”
Psychology teacher and social studies department chair Therese Iglesias said, "We decided to make a class activity where all the social studies teachers get together, they choose their country with the help of their students and then they do some performance related to that culture and then they talk a little bit about what United Nations means to them and also the countries they are representing."
The countries the students chose to showcase include Cuba, South Korea, Chuuk, and Mexico, just to name a few. The students taking the class say they just want to encourage diversity, connections with people and cultural engagement.
