The U.S. Navy wants to be ready to "fight tonight." That's the new framework being pushed out as the Navy's eye on China's reach into Taiwan sharpens. During an interview with the nonpartisan group Atlantic Council, Naval operations Chief Admiral Mike Gilday said China could seize Taiwan within the next two years.

"Now based on what we are seeing from an increasingly aggressive China and Russia we have our eyes on preparing ourselves for a potential fight tonight," he said. "So that could happen at any time."

The admiral shared his view on broadcasted program, saying the debate within the U.S. seems to be between readiness and capacity.

"I do not want to field ships out there in a fight that are not lethal, capable, and ready to win," he said.

That capability is contingent on the multi-billion dollar Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act

"The quicker we get a budget for 23, the better," Gilday said.

That budget, sitting in U.S. Congress, when passed would also have regional impact. For Guam - the NDAA would "require the designation of a senior DOD individual to be responsible for the missile defense acquisition and sustainment for Guam."
