How does a bill become law? That's the lesson dozens of Guam's public high schoolers get the chance to learn at this year's Guahan Youth Summit. KUAM News caught up with participants at the four-day event happening this week at the Hilton Guam Resort in Tumon.

Okkodo High student Antwone Pablo is among the 70 students joining in on the discussion at this year's Guahan Youth Summit. "I’m looking forward to learning about how exactly a bill is created, like how it starts off with an idea and especially how we get to collaborate with different other schools so we can have student to student engagement."

Like Pablo, many here remain uncertain if a career in politics are in their future. But, officials have held events like these to offer our children a chance to learn and may be one day get involved in shaping how things run on our island.

Mia Charity is chief external affairs officer of the Close Up Foundation. She said, "Throughout the four days that the students are meeting, they’ll be looking at local legislative issues, so issues in the community that they are really interested in tackling and coming up with legislative proposals and recommendations that they will present to members of the legislature on the last day of the program."

The goal of this year’s summit is to inspire students and young citizens to engage in and shape public policy by learning more about the Government of Guam’s Legislative Branch. The students here come from the different public high schools.

Charity says the summit is held in partnership with the Guam Department of Education. She adds a select few high schoolers also get to take part in a federal program that allows them to get an up close and personal experience in the nation's capital.

"We do the local here in the fall and then in the spring, we have students come from Guam to Washington, DC for a weeklong program where they look at federal issues," she said.

The summit will wrap up with students making recommendations to the Guam Legislature on a variety of current and future public policies.
