"I’m just a victim here," Janette Ermita told KUAM News. "I can’t do those things. I am really embarrassed."

The 51-year-old mother was in tears as she alleged a Guam Police Department officer forced her to admit to a crime she said she never committed.

On Sept. 21, Superior Court documents show Ermita was charged with harassment.

A woman known to Ermita told authorities she got a text from a number in Nigeria claiming to be an assassin who was hired to kill her and demanding the alleged victim quit her job. And Ermita, court documents state, allegedly paid to have those messages sent.

"I am innocent, Ermita said. "I can’t do those kind of things."

She said it started when she went looking for a spiritual reader online.

She sent a WhatsApp message to the number which came from a country code in Nigeria. The reading told her about a woman – a former coworker- who was apparently interfering with her love life.

Ermita sent the $200 via PayPal for the service before the person messaging repeatedly asked if she wanted them to harm her former co-worker.

"They asked me, do you want me to do something to her to leave there," she said. "I said no. I refused. I can’t do those things. I am not that kind person."

The startling messages to the victim continued. Ermita says she then blocked the number and deleted all the messages.

Not knowing she may need that as evidence, she soon found out police were looking for her.

"After that day, Tuesday, a police officer called me," she said.

She went to the dededo precinct.

The officer interrogating her, she claims was unprofessional and forced her to admit guilt.

"I said I had nothing to do with those," she said. "I was really shocked when he showed me. He’s already pushing me to admit. You have to make a statement and admit everything that you did. I made a statement and he went outside. Then he read it to me and goes you have to put that you paid $200 to threaten her. That’s what he told me or else you are going to jail."

Ermita, a single mother and widow, reluctantly signed the police document to avoid going to prison.

Still, she was taken into custody and is facing a petty misdemeanor charge in local court.

Ermita is filing a complaint against the officer with GPD's internal affairs. She hopes it will be investigated.

In the meantime, Ermita admits it was a lesson learned whenever searching for services from complete strangers online.

"I didn’t really realize that this is all scammers that hacked all my information. Be careful," she said.
