A man caught on video surveillance badly beating a 12-year-old boy is spared from having to spend any additional time in prison. 41-year-old Oliver Jasen Desoto pleaded no contest to child abuse before Superior Court Judge Maria Cenzon today.
A no-contest plea does not expressly mean he's admitting guilt, but means the defendant waived his rights to a trial giving the court the go ahead to treat the case as if he pleaded guilty, according to Cornell Law.
Desoto got a one-year suspended sentence and was released from prison today. He will serve two years' probation. He also was ordered to stay away from the child.
As KUAM News reported, Desoto was arrested back in May after being caught on camera knocking the boy off his bicycle, and punching and kicking him repeatedly as he was on the ground. The attack happened in the parking lot of NCS Mart in Dededo.
