President Biden signed the PACt Act, expanding health and benefits for veterans. Now the Department of Veterans Affairs is in the region to register those who served to ensure they get the treatment they need.

"It is new legislation that was passed by Congress," James Sewell of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Pacific Islands-Honolulu said. "We are adding Veterans that need to be reached for agent orange and all the other airborne hazards and burn pits that happened during the war."

The VA spent a week on Guam, helping close to a hundred veterans, and is on Saipan this week to raise awareness and speak to the people directly.

"It is important because the veterans need to get added to the system because we do not know how they have been affected because of the burn pits and the hazards they were exposed to," Sewell said. "So adding them to the registry would be easier so that way when concerns do happen or any conditions we are able to address them at that time."

If veterans are not able to reach the VA clinic on the island, the national enrollment line is open at 1-800-827-1000. He says there are about 3,600 veterans in the region who fought in World War II and Vietnam. And to him, the mission is also personal.

"I feel like giving back to my brothers and sisters in arms," Sewell said. "So they are still giving for me so it is time for me to give back."
