Students from Okkodo High School are the talk of social media, but for all the wrong reasons. Vaping on school grounds and posting it on TikTok seems to have backfired on them, as their fellow students have been sharing it around.

Island residents who have seen the video shared their thoughts on the matter.

"I don’t condone it," Romalie Estoy said. "One I don’t know if they know the health issues that come from vaping. They could have lung issues and that’s going to scar them later on when they get older. So I think they should crack down on that in school. They shouldn’t be allowed to bring those things in. Any type of products, vaping cigarettes, lighters. They shouldn’t be with it so they should search them."

The video also drew the attention of Guam Education Board Chairman, Mark Mendiola.

"I brought it up to the superintendent and I think he’s going to address that with the appropriate administrator for that school," he said. "There’s a lot of things our students have access to and my message to the community, especially the parents, be aware that your students or your children that have access to these things and they’re bringing them to school is just not appropriate. I just encourage them that it’s something that should not be tolerated in the school system."

And when it comes to the health risks regarding vaping, Dr. Hoa Nguyen said this.

"Vaping is probably worse than smoking itself," he said. "So I would recommend to think twice about vaping. A lot of young children, young kids that try vaping and the problem is that a few of them have pulmonary hemorrhage, meaning they bleed inside your lungs because it take tremendous heat to vape. Be smart and be cool and stop vaping. That’s the cool part is you don’t have to do that."

GDOE interim Public Information Officer Michelle Franquez said an investigation is ongoing regarding the issue and Okkodo officials will take the appropriate disciplinary action needed against the students involved.
