Twelve million dollars for drug treatment and counseling services will be available for local programs.

Speaking today before the Rotary club, Attorney General Leevin Camacho says millions more are due as a result of national opioid abuse settlements with major pharmaceutical companies.

"The settlement funds can only be used for drug abatement, treatment and drug rehabilitation," he said. "So they made sure it wasn't going to go into the general fund to be used for pet projects. It's gonna be used to address the problems that created the accountability for these companies."

He said a law sponsored by Senator Amanda Shelton created an advisory council and established a trust fund for the settlement monies, which will continue to pour in as Big Pharma companies pay up for the opioid epidemic.

1201 Last month we entered into two additional settlements which are about $6.6-Billion, of that Guam can expect to receive maybe 2.2 to 2.5-million dollars. those are tentative settlements, but if they are approved that's gonna be added to the pot. so if you add perdue, and Teva and Alegran we're looking at $16 to $17 million."

Camacho said they're also seeing an uptick in opioid use among younger people, which is a growing concern.
