NMI secretary of finance sets the record straight about Customs chief's transition

After a controversial reassignment that some say is politically motivated, the CNMI Director of Customs Jose Mafnas was transitioned to the Department of Commerce as the Director of Export, Importation, and Public Outreach. And NMI Secretary of Finance David Atalig wants to set the record straight.

Atalig says that he made the reassignment of Mafnas "with reservation," but says that the move is an effort to increase collaboration between the Division of Alcohol, Beverage, Tobacco Control and Division of Customs and Biosecurity.

In a press release, Atalig said, "Director Mafnas’ leadership and vision as shown throughout his time as Director of Customs underscores his abilities to accomplish the critical duties and responsibilities of this new role."
