Yet another award has been bestowed upon the Guam Department of Education’s outgoing superintendent. Jon Fernandez recently received the Magahaga Award at Adelup. Fernandez earned the honor for his leadership and commitment to Guam public schools and his positive impact on the island for the last decade.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero recognized Fernandez’s impactful character, announcing, "But one thing that I really have great respect for is your love and passion for the kids and we can see that because your agenda I think for improving the department of education was always focused towards the children. Making sure that the children have their resources, their support."

After ten years of service to GDOE, Fernandez is leaving his position and moving to Phoenix to focus on his family. Throughout his time as superintendent, Fernandez’s dedication has impacted the island’s public schools in a positive way.

"Jon, a lot of great accomplishments and we wanted to present to you this Magahaga Award and on the behalf of the people of Guam, we do recognize your legacy and distinguished dedication to education and of course other public services so again on the behalf of the people of Guam just like to your great achievements and present you with this award," the governor continued.

Fernandez's last day with the title was today.
