For parents of children waiting for the COVID vaccine, the two-and-a-half-year wait is over. Over the weekend, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Dr. Rochelle Walensky gave the green light on Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines for children under 5.

Back here on Guam, the Department of Public Health and Social Services is just waiting on the island's allocation to arrive to begin giving the shots to the 6 months and up age group. Public Health Interim Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bob Leon Guerrero hopes the vaccines arrive this week so the agency can begin administering the shots.

"We are going to be giving the vaccines at Public Health and we’ll also do it at Agana Shopping Center and Dr. Um’s clinic," he said. "Hopefully other clinics will start to say yes and we’ll go ahead and start doing it. But we are not depending on them, but it would’ve been much nicer if people could get the vaccines for their children at their pediatrician’s clinic."

At this time, there is no word yet on when the vaccines for kids under five will arrive. Public Health assures that once the vaccines do come in, they will begin giving the shots right away. In the meantime, Leon Guerrero encourages doubtful parents to consult with their child's doctor for any concerns.
