Over 5,000 GDOE students are in the classrooms for the next month.

The summer school program helps students catch up, who may be dealing with academic challenges.

GDOE Deputy Superintendent Joe Sanchez told KUAM News that summer school operations are doing good.

"Today we had our first debriefing with our summer school coordinators and we do this every Friday, where we clarify any questions that they have, they can report any issues and then we can give any instructions that we have to provide to them," he said. "Overall it seems to be going well. -- Summer classes started on Monday and it wasn't without any challenges such as busing delays and lack of school supplies. Based on the reports today it was some busing issues the first few days but then we were able to quickly address that with Department of Public Works. We're clear on where the students are actually located. So the buses will be picking up at those particular sites. There was just some questions regarding some of the supplies that we're getting to them regarding gardening so we're making sure that were delivering those supplies to them this week and some of them are gonna be next week."

After projecting 6,000 students to sign up for the program, GDOE saw an increase from the 4,500 that registered initially. Sanchez noted over 5,000 students are participating.

"That's 2,700 students for elementary, 800 for middle, and about 1,700 for high school. The teachers increased to 180 for elementary, 60 for middle and 150 for high school so we've got some 350 teachers overall," he said.

Student supervision is provided by school aides, community program aides, as well as interns from the Governor's 2022 Summer Employment Program

Summer class sessions conclude for elementary and middle school students on July 22, while high schoolers end on July 29.

Although classes have begun, Sanchez said parents can contact your child's respective schools to see if they can be accommodated into the program.
