Guam organizations and officials are continuing to attempt to manage the stray animal population -- a problem that's existed on the island for decades. The overflow of stray animals continues to be an issue in Guam causing concern for both the islanders and the animals. A 2014 survey by Humane Society International predicts the amount of strays to increase on the island by 3% every year.

To control the growing number, Tamuning-Tumon-Harmon mayor Louise Rivera explained that Guam organizations and government officials are searching for a solution.

"These are issues that really need to be addressed so I'm calling on our Department of Agriculture our director a lot and animal control to help us to take care of these stray animals," she told KUAM News.

Rivera said that one of their solutions is purchasing traps for community members to place on their property so that the animals can be transported to GAIN.

Guam Animals In Need in Yigo houses around 70 dogs, which is no match for the estimated 30,000 boonies wandering the island. However, there might be a solution taking flight to open up more kennel space.

The Boonie Flight Project organizes flights to transport puppies from Guam all the way to the mainland to their forever homes. The organization's co-founder, Lauren Cabrera, said their upcoming mission to help the local shelter in August.

"We're hoping to empty out GAIN completely of dogs on the flight and send the entire shelter, cats and dogs, to rescues and adopters stateside. So that they have absolutely no dogs there," Cabrera said.

As local organizations are working to manage the overflow of pets, GAIN executive director Alison Hadley says community members can help by encouraging family and friends to spay and neuter their pets.
