Over in the CNMI the Taste of the Marianas Festival will kick off this weekend, highlighting the best of CNMI cuisine at the Garapan Fishing Base. Along with the colorful tastes of food from the region, there will also be a new display of village flags at the opening festival.
The flags are part of a village pride contest conducted by the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers with the CNMI Public School System and the Saipan, Tinian, and Rota Mayors’ offices. According to a media release, “more than 800 entries were received, and 35 student works of art were selected to inspire the final flag designs.”
Co-chair of the council Jerry Tan said, “The Council realized that there was a need for village flags to showcase what makes each village so special. Students of the Marianas accepted the challenge and thoughtfully designed flags that captured the best of home and what makes their villages unique.”
