With less than two weeks left before the filing deadline, just 10 candidates have submitted their official packets to run for senator. So far just five democrats and five republicans have filed, and only three of them are incumbents.
The five democrats are: incumbents Sens. Jose "Pedo" Terlaje and Joe S. San Agustin, along with Dwayne San Nicolas, Fred Bordallo, Jr. and Jonathan Savares. The five Republicans, are incumbent Sen. Telo Taitague and Harvey Egna, Sandra Reyes Seau, Thomas Fisher and Joaquin "Ken" Leon Guerrero. Election commission director Maria Pangelinan said it was "unusual" to have so few filings this late before the deadline. But Democratic party chairman Tony Babauta said he's fairly confident they'll have a full slate of candidates. We didn't hear back from GOP Chairman Juan Carlos Benitez.
Four senatorial incumbents are vacating their seats: Clynt Ridgell is not seeking re-election. Telena Nelson and James Moylan are running for Congress. Tony Ada is running for lieutenant governor.
The deadline to file is Tuesday, June 28.
