Just in time for Pride Month, the Guam Community College launched its first-ever scholarship geared towards the LGBTQ community on Monday.
The scholarship's application process is now live and interested individuals who self-identify as a member of the LGBTQ community can apply online, which will be awarded by the Fall Semester of 2022.
GCC President Dr. Mary Okada shared how the idea of the grant came about.
"This was something that we had rolled out in a summit that we offered a couple of years ago and at one of the requests from that summit was to whether the college would consider sponsoring such a scholarship," she said. "So we went through to make sure that we're not violating any Title IX in terms of how this scholarship was written so it had gone through a legal review and so we're fairly confident that we will have interested individual."
Okada noted that one student will be awarded up to $1,000 per academic year, which will be evenly split into the Fall and Spring semesters.
It is funded through the GCC Foundation, which supports projects and programs at Micronesia's leader in career and technical workforce development that are not funded by the government.
The last day to apply for the "LGBTQ Leadership Scholarship" is August 31.
