The island paid tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. In a commemoration ceremony on this memorial day, the island's leaders and families came together to honor and remember those who dedicated their life to service. Veterans who were not able to receive final military rights because of the pandemic were finally honored at the Guam Veterans Cemetery in Piti.

Teresita Taitingfong, a Gold Star Family member, said, "It was so memorable. It was so nice and healing for my lost of him two years ago and it was just so wonderful that they invited me to be one of the participants for the Golden families."

Teresita shared part of the life her husband, Joseph, lived before he was laid to rest, saying, "At the time I was not married with him. He was single when he joined the army. But I am pretty sure that his family also is very pleased with what he had done and accomplished."

Guam and the nation's flags were placed on the fallen's resting place while community members gathered to reflect and remember.

Senator Joe San Agustin added, "They've always said 'Some gave some, some gave all.' This is where we pay respect to all who have given all. That is the key of memorial day. We recognize the folks who did not come back home, did not take off that uniform, did not retire. This is where we bring honor and respect to those that have fallen before us and that have made sure that our freedom stays free."

This was the first memorial day ceremony in-person after more than two years.
