The manufacturer of the Gummies varieties of Skittles, Starburst, and Life Savers, Mars Wrigley Confectionery US, has announced via the Food and Drug Administration that it is recalling those products. Acting Environmental Public Health Officer Supervisor Jerome Garcia detailed what caused the recall.

"For this recall, since it’s such a popular brand name product, Skittles, Starburst, Life Savers," he said. "One of their reasons for recalling it is because there’s actually thin metal strands or physical contaminants that were found to be in this particular lot of gummies."

He also verified that some of the contaminated product is here on island. Public Health confirmed that Super Happy Mart in Barrigada had the affected LifesSaver gummies, but has since pulled it from their shelves. Cosmos Distributing was also identified as a distributor of the affected product. They worked with their teams yesterday to pull the remaining contaminated products from shelves and will discontinue the sale of the recalled items.

"We have determined that these products are being sold on island," Garcia said. "As soon as we get the notification, we push it out to all the distributors and retailers that we have on our contact list to inform them of the recall so that if they’re potentially carrying these affected products, they go ahead and take action on their end."

To find out if the gummies are from the contaminated batch or not, look for the 10-digit manufacturing code; the first three digits in this code will indicate the affected product. The list is attached at the bottom of the story.

"So if it matches with what’s on the list, then that product is potentially contaminated and if it so, you can probably return it to the place you got it from and they’ll be able to handle it," Garcia said.

Should you ingest any of the contaminated products and start to feel sick, you are urged to seek immediate medical attention. So far, Public Health hasn’t received any reports of illnesses or injuries from the affected gummy products.
