As can be expected, the reaction to the Governor's State Of The Island Address was mixed. Democrats of course were generally supportive and Republicans were more critical.

Here's a sampling of what some of our other political leaders had to say.

"I do support many of the initiatives she mentioned last night, but there wasn't much detail. I think its important to know what those details are to make sure there's fairness in how these things are implemented. And again the legislature always demands transparency and I think that's key moving forward," said Senator Sabina Perez.

"My fundamental takeaway was two things. One is it was very light on public safety. Health care was covered well I think, but in my final analysis I have to say that it was generally a report card, a lot of things that have already been started in the Government of Guam that have been continued on<" said Senator Chris Duenas.

Minority Leader Jim Moylan told KUAM News, "What I was really hoping to hear was about the economic plan. And I didn't. I needed to hear the plan about how we're gonna get people back to work and I didn't hear that. We have the potential of over $661 million right. Much more than we had in the previous first round but there's no real plans and I was expecting to hear real plans on how these funds are going to be expended."

And Senator Joanne Brown said, "While many of our people are still struggling out there, and yes they're receiving fderal money, they're looking forward to their next checks. But that has its limits, you just don't see that sense of "do as I do.' The governor is saying one thing and yet how she operates with regards to continuing hiring and you hear about payraises at a time when we're challenged with all these other issues that are happening."

"This talk should've been happening six months ago and not when we're looking at opening up our economy in May, two months from now," commentd Senator Tony Ada, also the vice-chairman of the Republican Party of Guam. "All this talk should've been happening months ago, because we need to ensure that when we move forward and we have a plan in place, which there is no plan in place, that it's going to go smoothly."

And Democrat Party of Guam chairperson Sarah Thomas-Nededog said, "It's easy for us to sit back and say she didn't do this, she didn't do that. I get that. And there are sure things that might've been missed. But there's quite a bit that has been done. and I ask everyone out there, please reflect on what is that we have done, individually and in our families and our organizations, and what is it that we're gonna do because we cannot expect her to do all of it."

The Guam Chamber of Commerce also weighed in, thanking the Governor for plans to reform business permitting procedures, and her call to make permanent the 3% BPT for small businesses making $250,000 or less.

But they also called once again for a rollback of the BPT for ALL businesses back to 4%.
