A steel wall inside a shipping container fell on four men, trapping three of them inside during a Guam Customs and Quarantine inspection at the LMS lot across from the Micronesia Mall.
A customs officer arrived at LMS lot at around 9 this morning to conduct a scheduled inspection of a shipping container explained
Guam Customs Director Ike Peredo.
"I think the container came in from the U.S. they were doing an inspection on that container and that's when the incident happened," he said.
It was during the inspection when the customs officer and three LMS personnel became trapped inside the container when the steel wall fell. re Department responded to the industrial accident at 9:43 a.m.
According to GFD spokesperson Kevin Reilly, the men were extricated using Jaws of Life and airbags, they were transported to the Guam Regional Medical City.
Reilly says all were conscious and alert, in stable condition with no life-threatening injuries.
Peredo gave few details behind the reason for the inspection.
"The container was stacked for inspection and that's why the officer followed up the request for that inspection and reported to that site," he said.
Peredo was unable to provide anything further information on the matter. We asked him if there are any concerns from his agency and whether he's contacted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or the Department of Labor.
"At this point of time I am pretty sure there are other government agencies that will probably look into this incident but I can't tell you at this time," he said.
KUAM reached out to LMS for information on the inspection, the only comment Marketing Director Sharon Price provided as of news time was, "We were putting the safety of our employees first to make sure they were all okay and then we have another team investigating what actually happened."
According to LMS, all injured persons have been treated and released from the hospital and their investigation into the causes of this accident is on-going
