With grey skies above them, the Ludwig family gathered near a tree along a Route 2 in Agat this morning.

The children of 39-year-old Karimy Liwis Ludwig placed flowers at the base of the tree where the vehicle she was in on Saturday morning came to a fatal stop.

Her death marks the second fatal-automobile accident of the year.

"I fall asleep, and it was not like long," Reisy Ludwig, the crash victim's husband said. "I just fell asleep and by the time I wake I already hit the tree."

After swerving off the road and crashing into a tree, Reisy Ludwig woke up and found his wife's head resting on his lap.

"I woke up and I'm still in the car but the car is like smoke like," he recalled. "So I woke up and my wife is just...and I tried to wake her, I tried to see if she, I tried to wake her."

It was early Saturday morning around 2 a.m. when Guam Police Department officers with the Southern Precinct Command responded to the single automobile crash. Three people were in the car.

Reisy Ludwig was driving after his wife and nephew picked him up from work after his shift at Shirley's had just ended.

"She asked me to drive because she said she was going to sleep," Reisy Ludwig said. "So then after that I drive and I almost made it to my house but..."

After the crash, his wife was taken to Naval Hospital Guam with CPR conducted en route by Guam Fire Department medics.

According to GPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Tapao, Karimy Ludwig later succumbed to her injuries and pronounced deceased by attending physicians.

"With this, we still need to determine whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors relative to this crash investigation by traffic investigators assigned to highway patrol," Tapao said. "Right now the Guam Police Department cannot confirm any of the statements that are made. We still have to bring the family in for an interview or the operator of the vehicle for pre-trip interview."

Karimy Ludwig is survived by her husband and three children, including two teenage daughters and an 8-month-old baby boy.

"She really cared for us, especially my kids," Reisy Ludwig said.

"She was a loving mother, she was caring," 14-year-old Kermy Ludwig said. "She was funny."

"My mom was the best mom, she was everything to us," 18-year-old Reimy Liwis said. "I just love her and I really miss her."

Funeral arrangements have not been made yet, as the family says they are waiting for Karimy Ludwig to be discharged from the hospital.
