Man's death under investigation after marshals execute warrant

The Superior Court Marshals Division is investigating an incident that occurred in the Barrigada area early this morning.
According to Court Policy Planning and Communications Director Shawn Gumataotao marshals were executing a warrant as part of its Guam Immediate Violations Enforcement or GIVE program.
"As they approached a residence believed to be place where they were trying to serve that warrant they heard some kind of commotion behind the door," he said. "Their protocol calls for them to call GPD then they were with GPD to breach it and that part of the entire incident is now under investigation by the Marshals Division."
Police spokesperson Paul Tapao said officers responded to an injured person report. However, KUAM has learned that a man had died. Information as to the manner of death has not yet been released. Barrigada Mayor June Blas was on scene at the Portusach Apartments this morning.

"Well we just got a call we were informed about a shooting in this area heard gunshots," she said. "So apparently the resident in the area is a young gentleman, not sure the whole story about this we heard it was a I think you know the family is going through some crisis and whatnot."
Blas confirms the area is known for drug activity.
"This is a problematic area that we have known of we have been trying to work with GPD and looking at this area," Blas said.
The name of the individual who died was not released. As for the GIVE program, Gumataotao said it allows marshals to act quick and swift on violations.
"But in this particular case it was active warrant out with the program so but the program wants to ensure that those that are in it they will be held accountable for their actions very quickly," he said. "But in this case, it was obviously a whole completely different action."
