In classic literature and movies, the Land of Oz is a mythical place, known for its wonder and color and prosperity, full of excitement and adventure. And fittingly, those characteristics are the personality of the first baby born on United States soil in 2020, just a few scant moments after midnight to ring in the New Year.

Little Oz Young came into the world at the Guam Memorial Hospital to parents Tammie and Kris Young, from Tamuning. Oz arrived happy and healthy, delivered naturally 42 seconds after New Year's Eve turned into New Year's Day. His parents chose Oz's middle name to be "Carlin", which is Irish Gaelic for "Little Champion".

He's the couple's second child, with his big sister eager to welcome home her new sibling. Needless to say, his mama and papa couldn't be prouder.  "He's actually really chill," said Tammie, holding her newborn. "He's quiet. He doesn't cry much! He's really easy."

The Youngs were gifted more than $7,500 in donations from companies through Archway (the "I Love Guam" brand), including baskets from the families of the first babies born in past years.

Mika Caldwell with Archway told the couple, "The New Year's baby from 2017, which is Nina and Allen...and 2019, from Desiree and Kyle, both families have paid it forward and contributed some very nice gift baskets for you."

Tammie also said Oz wasn't expected until January 18, but the GMH nursing staff wasn't just caring and encouraging, they were cheering her on to be the first. "They did a whole countdown, yeah, while I was giving birth," Tammie laughed.

But while overwhelmed at the island generosity and love, Tammie and Kris are just simply happy to know their son is a healthy part of their family. And they truly are grateful for the Guamanians worldwide that sent their congratulations and well-wishes on our Facebook Live stream this morning.

So welcome, Oz, and we're happy to have you as part of the Guam family.
